
At the Theiss Center we provide opportunities for students pursuing degrees in several fields of study including psychology, counseling and social work. We welcome bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate level students seeking internship and practicum opportunities. Post-doctoral placements are also available.
Helpful Information:
- The number of students we can accommodate will vary year to year based on the availability of clinical supervisors.
- We ask for at least a 2-semester commitment with a minimum of one full day per week.
- Some previous clinical experience can be helpful but is not required.
Internship placements are available in the following programs:
Theiss Child and Adolescent Trauma Services (CATS)
- Theiss CATS serves individuals ages two through transition age who have experienced trauma.
- Theiss CATS provides outpatient therapy services to children/adolescents and their families utilizing evidence-based treatments including Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Integrative Treatment of Complex Trauma (ITCT) and Trauma-Responsive Play Therapy.
Early Childhood Mental Health (ECMH)
- ECMH Outpatient serves children ages 2-7 who are experiencing a range of behavioral and emotional disruptions such as: aggression, anxiety, depression, withdrawal, disruptive behaviors, and emotional difficulties.
- ECMH Outpatient clinicians provide outpatient therapy services to young children and their families utilizing evidence-based treatments including Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Incredible Years group therapy, Theraplay Foundations and Child Centered Play Therapy.
Therapeutic Nursery and Preschool (TNP)
- Serving children ages 6 weeks through 6 years not yet eligible for Kindergarten who are diagnosed with a mental health disorder or are at risk for mental health disorders due to exposure to alcohol or drugs in utero and/or instability in the home environment.
- TNP is a classroom-based therapeutic service and includes a parent education program and individual child-centered play therapy, as well as Incredible Years group therapy.

- Undergraduate Students

We offer many experiences for undergraduate students including opportunities to assist with intake appointments and clinical evaluations; support clinicians in connecting patients to local resources; and assist in leading groups.
One hour per week of clinical supervision is offered with the potential for group supervision as well.
- Graduate Students

We offer many experiences for graduate level students including opportunities to lead intake appointments, co-lead clinical evaluations, and co-lead (or possibly lead) individual therapy sessions. Graduate level students may also have the opportunity to attend live and/or web-based trainings on evidence-based treatments during their time with Theiss.
One hour per week of clinical supervision is offered with the potential for group supervision as well.
- Doctorate Students

We offer many experiences for post-graduate level students including opportunities to lead intake appointments, lead clinical evaluations, and co-lead and lead individual therapy sessions. Doctorate level students may also have the opportunity to attend live and/or web-based trainings on evidence-based treatments during their time with Theiss.
Individual clinical supervision is provided based on doctoral program requirements and availability of psychologist supervisors.
